The salmon ladder

Share

Along the winding paths through the Slereboån valley, there are two impressive salmon ladders to behold. Salmon ladders are designed to facilitate the passage of salmon past natural or man-made barriers along their life cycle.

The tale of these salmon ladders commenced when the Slittorp mill shut down permanently, opening up the possibility of building the first salmon ladder in 1990. Soon afterwards, in 1991, when Blinneberg's frame saw had also been was also shuttered, the second salmon ladder came into existence. These engineering marvels enable salmon to travel upstream to the newly formed, shallow, gravel-bedded spawning sites higher up the river.

At Röserna, there is a natural barrier for the salmon. The beaver appeared here in the 1990s, creating a dam that prevents salmon from migrating upstream in the river.

The salmon ladders narrate the tale of the interaction between man and nature, where technology meets wilderness.
