Tingberg Hill

Share

A little way outside Lödöse is Tingberg Hill. Until 1857, this was the execution site for Ale and Vättle counties. It is a place of dramatic significance with a dark past.

On Tingberget in Lödöse, also known as Galgebacken, the shadows of history have loomed over the site since the early 14th century. It was here, in this ominous place, that dark chapters were played out in the name of justice.

The last execution on Tingberget took place in 1857 of those guilty of the infamous mail robbery at "Båstorps Bräcka" in Skepplanda parish. The execution took place by the dreaded method of beheading, as hanging had previously been banned as a method of execution.

Today, the executioner's axe is on display at Alingsås Museum and handcuffs at Lödöse Museum. But walking around the site, among the lush green surroundings, you can still sense the small depressions in the ground. These mark the final resting place of some of those who met their fateful destiny here, and they speak quietly of a bygone era that should never be forgotten.
