Rock carving at Jätteberget

Share

On the south side of Jätteberget in Alvhem there is a small rock outcrop with very beautiful ship carvings. An ancient 3,000-year-old fleet sails ahead. Is it the sunships that come with new life? Or are the ships carved to give seafarers safe passage?

The rock carvings are etched into the stone, and a close look reveals 25 ships, creatures of the animal kingdom, a lone human-like figure, 45 small bowl pits, two footprints and some enigmatic symbols or glyphs. This fascinating collection of signs and symbols covers an area of approximately 6.5 x 4.5 meters and gives us a glimpse into the lives of people thousands of years ago.

When these ships and figures were carved into the stone, the Göta River was a narrow fjord, and the roar of the sea reached up to present-day Skepplanda. The carved ships here on the Giant's Mountain have a style all their own, with their sturdy bows and outward arching tops distinguishing them from most other carved ships in the Nordic region.

So, when you visit this place of cultural and historical importance, imagine the ancient people who created these remarkable works of art. Let your mind sail with the ancient ships and explore the past that time has preserved on this outstanding rocky outcrop.
